University of Milano partecipates with the Applied Intelligent Systems Laboratory of the Department of Computer Science that is also the project coordinator. Mission of AIS Lab is the development and application of methods based on statistics and on computational geometry to four main field. In 3D scanning, main results have been: development of one of the first very-low cost 3D scanners, techniques for multi-scale and adpative meshing obtained from reframing the problem of building a mesh into a learning problem. More recently AIS-Lab is working on automatic defect identification through 3D laser patterns in automotive industry. A pioneer work on difect identification and classification has been sponsored by Electronic Systems.

In Virtual Reality AIS-Lab has worked on animation of both skeleton-based figures and faces through data acquired with Motion Capture. AIS-Lab has also investigated the neural processing of virtual reality stimuli trying to answer the question: "How real is virtual reality". More recently AIS-Lab is leading a pilot project on the application of VR to rehabilitation of neglect.

In Medical Imaging, AIS-Lab has developed several statistical based techniques for de-noising and image enhancement (dot-removal, equalization, edge preserving noise suppression...) and 3D local tomography. This research is mainly sponsored by the industry: ALTA-Lab, CEFLA, Gendex Imaging, since 2003.

In Motion capture AIS-Lab has developed innovative calibration methods, algorithms for tracking dense sets of markers and to high accuracy tracking in presence of occlusions. This research has been sponsored by BTS and Dies Group. AIS-Lab has also worked on motion analysis, by developing adequate models for the interpretation of learning motion skills (Behavior or Emotional), and on the analysis of both cognitive and motor tasks.

AIS-Lab has published more than 50 refereed journal papers and holds 12 patents on the results of its research.
